TikTok Offers Users Control to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features more than 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This advancement coincides with a surge in AI content, driven by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that approximately 10% of the quickest rising content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we intend to offer the community the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” stated a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as artificially created. In total, over 100 mn media items are added to the service each day, making AI content a limited portion of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be in a position to reduce or increase the amount of AI-generated videos they view by opening the “manage topic” setting in the application and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the setting encompass current affairs, style, beauty, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines require users to label “realistic” AI-generated content, and it forbids malicious AI impersonations of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.

In addition, the service will henceforth attach an artificially created tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is aimed to stop users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for experts and groups to create informative material about using AI responsibly. This project will support non-profit groups dedicated to educating coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has justified its content review process, following controversy over plans to make redundant numerous content moderators in the United Kingdom. It is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by humans. The platform stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
