Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state early analysis indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
